Hurricane Katrina hit many of places in the United States, Canada and several other places. Places that were struck by Hurricane Katrina are the Bahamas, South Florida, Cuba, Louisiana (especially Greater New Orleans), Mississippi, Alabama, Florida Panhandle, and most of Eastern North America.
What Happened?
Hurricane Katrina was the most deadliest and most destructive Atlantic tropical cyclone of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season. Hurricane Katrina was the costliest natural disaster, as well as one of the top five most deadliest hurricanes, in the history of the United States of America. Hurricane Katrina is the seventh most intense Atlantic hurricane ever recorded, part of the 2005 season that included three of the six most intense Atlantic hurricanes ever documented. The hurricane started out as a category 3. When Hurricane Katrina hit, it brought winds with speeds from 100-140 miles an hour and stretched 400 miles across. 80% of the population was evacuated before the storm even hit. The Superdome was declared a shelter of last resort for people that were unable to get out of the city.By the end of August, New Orleans was flooded with 80% of the city under 15 feet of water.
Why did it happen in those areas?
The disaster happened in this area because New Orleans is on the coast of the United States of America and the warm ocean water makes it a good spot for tropical storms and hurricanes to form.
Who was Effected?
The people that lived in New Orleans were affected the most by Hurricane Katrina but people from eastern North America were also affected by the hurricane. Hurricane Katrina started out as a tropical storm. The effects of Hurricane Katrina, were catastrophic and widespread. The hurricane left 1833 people dead and 705 people missing. 2 deaths occurred in Alabama, 14 in Florida, 2 in Georgia, 1 in Kentucky, 1,577 in Louisiana, 238 in Mississippi, and 2 deaths in Ohio. Although, the storm was very strong and effected Noth America, no deaths were recorded and only 29 minor injuries were recorded.
